Kinja Development Centre Takes New Approach Into Youth Development

Kinja Football Club have opened a brand-new Development Centre project, which will allow boys and girls from 10 years old and below to develop their football skills, in a fun and challenging environment, to master their individual ball skills, before moving to more competitive sides in the U11 age category.

Following our merger with Camden Town Ladies FC, which provides an exit pathway for our female players to go on and play for a fully established ladies side, Kinja sought to establish a programme which encouraged boys and girls to play football from a younger age [our youngest full side is our U11 Boys team], and develop the key skills and components required in order to prosper, and succeed in competitive football, both through their teenage years, as well as into the adults game. However, we wanted to make sure that the children that come into the club at such a young age are given the best chance to develop as young football players, with a programme designed to put them one step ahead of every other child at every other club, at their same age.

Using the combined knowledge and experience of the clubs Chairman and Vice Chairman, Pranay Dhanani and Harry Sherman, as well as thorough research into the development of youth players, and the methodologies to provide the best opportunities to children that want to get into football, one name continuously came up when it comes to Youth Development, and that is when we paid close attention to American-born Tom Byer, who has spent over 20 years running youth soccer camps in Japan, and was appointed Head Technical Advisor by the Chinese FA in 2012.

Tom Byer is incredibly well known for his "football starts home" philosophy, which emphasises the need for players to start practicing their technical skills from as young as 2 years old. According to Byer, between the ages of 2 and 6 years old is when the core technical skills are developed within children. There is also a much greater chance that players who haven't developed these skills, before they join an organized match-playing side, will drop out of the sport after just 1-2 years.

It was this philosophy that was brought in when setting up the Kinja Development Centre. For players of any technical ability to come into the session and work on their individual skills, before practicing them at home, is vitally important before introducing them to organized play and more competitive matches. Opening up the Development Centre for children aged 10 and below also allows any players who missed out on that 2-6 year old window of development, to begin working on these core skills and develop them to the point where they are competent enough to enjoy the game as much as possible, thus reducing the drop-out rate as they enter their teenage years, which is a massive problem, not just in England, but worldwide.

After connecting with Tom Byer through his Twitter account, he also speaks of the importance of parent involvement too, saying that "a team should have ball mastery at the centre of their development and ensuring they engage parents of young kids, to make sure they understand the importance. Parents are crucial for the success of their kids." As the contact time with coaches can be anywhere between 1-4 hours weekly, the importance of parents' involvement and encouragement in helping their child work on these ball mastery skills is significant. This is because their understanding of the skills that are being taught during sessions, allows them to encourage, monitor and help their child work on these at home. More time learning skills = Better they become at skills = More engaged in the sport = More practice = More enjoyment.

As the Kinja Development Centre grows, continuous feedback will be given to the parents, as well as informing them on the skills that have been worked on during the sessions, which will allow them to make sure these skills are practiced with a small ball at home. Therefore, the work that is going on within the Kinja Development Centre, really encourages young players to stay in the sport throughout their teenage years, which will help them socially, physically and mentally in the long term.

For more information about the Kinja Development Centre, please fill in the application form on our website. Alternatively, please email us at info.kinjafc@gmail.com or give us a call on 07379 729 615. We look forward to working with you to help your child fall in love with our beautiful game.

Kinja Results Update 3rd & 4th March 2018

There was only one game to go ahead for our Kinja teams this weekend, and it was our U15 Boys, who had a home fixture against top of the table Headstone Manor, in what was expected to be a thrilling game.

Pranay Dhanani and Harry Sherman, Chairman and Vice Chairman respectively, were both in attendance to see the boys, as was one of our head coaches, Mo Jama, and former coach Sajith Sri. So it there was a lot of support for our boys side, who have had some big results against tough opposition, and should be a lot higher than they are in mid-table.

The boys took a little while to get into the game, and found themselves a goal down within the first ten minutes, after a nice move was ended with some clinical finishing, with a goal that goalkeeper Leyth could do nothing about. All was not looking good.

Fortunately for the boys, they had a number of trialists making their debut, and one debutant, Gabs, made a strong start to his Kinja account, with a lovely goal, that levelled the sides up, about midway through the first half.

El-Nashi was extremely unlucky to put Kinja into the lead moments later, when he headed in a corner ball, only for the referee to rule it out for handball, after having a discussion with the oppositions linesman. It was a moment that required VAR, that's for sure. But we didn't have to wait long to be put into the lead.

Just before half time, Kinja win a corner. Java strolls up to take and, as cool as he always is, bends the ball straight into the top corner directly from the corner spot. The ball didn't even hit the inside netting, the bend was that pure. An incredible goal to put Kinja 2-1 as they headed into half time.

The second half got off to a slow start, but we were treated to arguably the best goal that's ever been scored in grassroots football. Ball was played into Java, with his back to goal, he beautifully flicked it over the immediate defenders head, spun and struck the sweetest volley known to mankind, straight into the top corner. All of the Kinja supporters went wild as Java showed just the kind of magic he can produce when he wants to.

3-1 up, and the boys clung on for dear life to see out the win. The woodwork was hit twice, and our number 1, Leyth, was brought off with a hip injury that sees him out for 3 months, and technically the rest of the season, it was looking like a tricky end. Gabs headed in goal, and did exceptionally well to hold his own against wave after wave of Headstone Manor attacks.

A fortunate goal for the opposition proved to just be a consolation, and Kinja confirmed a brilliant victory against very tough opposition, on a weekend where all other teams had to have a weekend indoors, with no football to play. 3-2 being the final result.

A huge well done to all of the U15 Boys, and we all wish Leyth a speedy recovery, and hope he comes back fighting!

Kinja Results Update 24th & 25th February 2018

Facing the cold winds this week was just our boys teams, as many of our international players are away on their half term holidays, meaning our girls teams were treated to a weekend off.

Our U15 Boys started their game against Pinnstars fresh from having a week off for the British half term holidays. Unfortunately, without any momentum to go into the game, the boys fell to a 2-1 away defeat, with Mo El-Nashi scoring the only goal for the visiting Kinja side. Despite the result, coaches Rob and Danny reported back that there were a number of strong individual performances, however the attitude and work ethic of our players did not match Pinnstars great efforts, which ultimately cost the boys a defeat in the Harrow Youth League, leaving the boys in 6th place in division 3, just 2 points behind 5th placed Brentham Colts. The boys are looking to bounce back from defeat in their game next week at home to Headstone Manor.

The U17 Boys also had a week off last week, so went into their game against LNER with no momentum. Without a natural goalkeeper available, and many first-choice defenders also away, Kinja were already facing an uphill battle. Unfortunately the boys lost 5-0, against a strong LNER side who proved clinical in front of goal, and inflicted another defeat on the struggling Kinja side, following their promotion to the Harrow League Premier Division. The defeat means that the U17 boys sit bottom of the Premier Division table, however they're just 1 point behind 7th placed Parkfield, with a game in hand. They'll be looking to come back strongly against high-flying Headstone Manor in next Sunday's clash.

Despite the international half term break, our U11 boys had 10 players at their disposal in their 9v9 clash against TFA United. TFA were struggling for numbers, though, so the game ended up being played as a 7v7. However, strong performances from all of the boys meant that a great game was played by all, with both sides ensuring that the boys from both sides faced difficult challenges, and hopefully learnt a lot from the experience.

Next week, all of our sides are scheduled for games, with the exception of our U15 girls, whose next game is scheduled on the 24th March. Hoping for more great performances across the board, as all of our teams continue to play the Kinja way of playing!

Following a number of cancellations due to the poor weather, we only have one result to report this weekend, from our U13 Hailstorm Girls team!

Unfortunately the girls lost 4-2 away to a strong Pro:Direct Academy side, but they will be hoping to bounce back from defeat when they travel to Hitchin Belles Blues in the cup next Saturday.

Hitchin Belles Blues currently sit top of the HGFPL U13 Division 2, and will provide a tough test for our travelling U13 side.

Rockets back to victory

The rockets got off to a great start, playing flowing, passing football and within the first 10 minutes the Croydon goalkeeper was tested several times, both Indie and Joya displayed great vision and tenacity to set Kasey free and her effort whistled just wide of the far post, Kasey then had a strong shot saved by the keeper after again Joya had provided an inch perfect pass and then Joya had a curling effort which was destined for the top corner well saved, Yasmin also hit the foot of the post after good work from Joya.
As the rockets applied more and more pressure it would only be a matter of time until the opening goal came and that goal came on 12 minutes.
Anna played the ball to Indie who travelled upfield and found Joya who broke free from her marker and she opened herself up and sent a beautiful curling effort towards the bottom right hand corner of the goal but the Croydon keeper pulled off a great save but only managed to palm the ball into Kaseys path who smashed the ball home.
Joya was very unfortunate not to double the rockets lead shortly after the opening goal when a move involving Anna, Indie, Kasey, Yasmin and Joya resulted in a shot from Joya hitting the cross bar, Croydon who worked tirelessly began to play counter attacking football and 3 crosses were dealt with quite comfortably by Anna in the rockets goal.
The rockets doubled their lead on 25 minutes when from a Croydon goal kick Natasha pushed up and marked the right back, Kasey prevented a pass into the centre backs, El marked the left back, Indie pushed up and marked the left midfielder which left the Croydon keeper with very limited options from the kick and her attempted pass to one of her teammates was well read by Joya who nipped in and stole the ball and hammered home from 12 yards out.
On 36 minutes Croydon got themselves back in the game when on a counter attack a ball was played forward and the rockets right back raised her hand for offside but wasn't aware that she was 5 yards deeper than the rest of the defence and therefore playing the Croydon player onside, the winger. Tossed the ball into the box and an attacking midfielder brought the ball down superbly and volleyed past Anna to take the game into halftime with the score at 2-1 to the rockets.
The 2nd half started in the same manner as the 1st with the rockets playing good, passing football and creating numerous chances and it began to look like luck wasn't on the rockets side as on 2 more occasions the Croydon post was struck by shots from Kasey and Joya.
Kasey soon extended the rockets lead when another excellent pass from Joya set her free and she curled her shot into the top right hand corner of the goal despite the brave attempt from the Croydon goalkeeper to keep the shot out.
This 2 goal cushion relaxed the rockets and there were large parts where Croydon had ball possession in good areas but never forced Anna into a save and in turn the game became an end to end game as when Croydon pushed forward and lost possession then the rockets would attack.
Croydon then got themselves back to within a goal of the rockets when again 1 player played a Croydon striker onside and she raced away and stroked the ball home as Anna advanced of her line.
Croydon play with huge pride and belief and they done them selves proud with their performance but the rockets were unfortunate to win by just 1 goal,
The post was hit 4 times, the crossbar once, and the keeper made several good saves but it's still 3 points in the bag
Team
Anna, Carlotta, Regan, Ashleigh, Indie, Joya, Pauline, Kasey, El, Yasmin, Mia B, Jess, Natasha.

AFC Wimbledon plays tennis with the Rockets

Kinja rockets were involved in a thunderous clash on Sunday at the home of AFC Wimbledon.
The weather was beautiful and the pitch was excellent so all the ingredients were there for a great game of football, Wimbledon are a big, strong physical side who challenge for every single ball and from the start they refused the rockets any space especially from goal kicks which forced Fiona to kick the ball long from goal kicks which meant that for the 1st 10 minutes the rockets rearguard were by far the busier as the ball was constantly returned from the goal kicks.
With 11 minutes on the clock Wimbledon took the lead that their pressure deserved when a cross into the box was scuffed away to the penalty spot where a Wimbledon midfielder was standing and she slotted into the bottom corner despite a great effort from Fiona to keep the ball out.
The rockets began to have success by using the wings and on several occasions Indie was able to deliver crosses into the box and on 1 occasion Kasey should of scored to level the game up but her effort was screwed wide.
Wimbledon soon doubled their lead when after a rockets attack was foiled a long ball upfield left 3 players clear of the rockets defence and the tricky little Wimbledon striker Cooley slotted home.
Wimbledon then had a goal ruled out for offside shortly after their 2nd goal but despite being 2 goals down the rockets still tried to play football but possession was lost too many times in key areas in centre midfield which resulted in the inevitable 3rd Wimbledon goal which took the game into halftime with Wimbledon 3 goals to the good.
The 2nd half began and the 1st goal in the half was going to be the important one and it was the rockets that got it, good link up play between Indie and Mia B saw a neat one two played just inside the Wimbledon half which set Indie away and as she drew the defender she laid the ball off to Joya who beat 1 defender and fired across the goalkeeper into the far corner to make it 3-1.
Fiona made several decent saves throughout the whole game but she was powerless to stop Wimbledon extending the lead with an hour gone, after tipping a goal bound shot onto the post the ball fell for a Wimbledon winger who ghosted in and tapped into the unguarded net to make it 4-1.
Shortly after the 4th goal a Wimbledon midfielder had to be carried off with a ankle injury which was self inflicted as she managed to kick her own ankle but we wish her a speedy recovery.
The rockets defence was left outnumbered many times after possession was lost and runners did not track back so it left 5 vs 4 on many occasions and 2 quick fire goals saw Wimbledon come out 6-1 winners.
Both Regan and Fiona were exceptional despite the defeat but it was clear to see why AFC Wimbledon are the Surrey county girls league champions.
Team
Fiona, Anna, Regan(c), Lindsey, Indie, Mia B, Aimee, Joya, Jess, Kasey, Shardonnae,Natasha, Carlotta, Yasmine.
