Kinja Rockets 2 - Harvesters 0.
Kinja rockets battled to a good 2-0 victory at the Hive on Saturday afternoon.
With Harvesters being in a position where they are unable to win the league anyone who thought that Harvesters would just turn up and not attempt to win the game were wrong. From the start Harvesters worked very hard to close the rockets down by hurrying any rockets player in possession of the ball but Mia B in midfield had a firm grip on the proceedings as she won several challenges in the centre of the field to start the rockets on several attacks.
With a back 3 of Audrey,Regan and Alex any long balls forward were dealt with well by the trio which then saw the rockets create their own attacks,
On several occasions Audrey released the energetic Indie down the right wing who in turn found Mia B, Kasey and Nicole quite regularly who began to cause the Harvesters rearguard plenty of problems and with just 7 minutes gone Nicole gave the rockets the lead that they deserved,
After good build up play from the back where the ball was moved quickly and along the ground the ball arrived at the feet of Nicole who hit a shot from 18 yards and despite the fact that she had 2 markers on her she managed to get her shot off, The keeper got down low to save the ball but the power behind the shot meant that she was unable to hold it and the ball squirmed out of her hands and dribbled over the line to give the rockets a well deserved lead.
Shortly after the rockets were denied a definite penalty when a bouncing ball struck an outstretched arm of a Harvesters player in the penalty area but the match official deemed it ball to hand and waved play on.
With calls from the Harvesters management team to be more aggresive the rockets knew that they would have to be patient and slowly break down the hard working, physical team that they were facing.
Kasey was unfortunate not to score on 2 occasions as she had a goalbound shot blocked away for a corner and another effort just flew over the crossbar, Bella and Indie combined well late in the half to create another chance, as the ball was played into the right channel Bella chased the ball but found herself surrounded by 2 players and slowly running out of space she back heeled the ball between 2 players for Indie to arrive and cross the ball into the box where the cross was met by Nicole who saw her effort go narrowly wide.
Regan was again outstanding in the middle of the back 3 as she had total control of events and between her and her teammates they ensured that Anna wasn't tested at all in the 1st half as the half concluded with the rockets a goal to the good.
The 2nd half saw the rockets pushing on in order to find that goal that would give them the cushion to go on and play more freely and Harvesters appeared to be happy to play on the counter attack, Indie,Joya and Mia all had good chances to beat Harvesters stand in keeper but their efforts were hit just wide of the far post, With 10 minutes gone in the 2nd half Anna in the rockets goal was finally called into action but she dealt with the 18 yard shot well, comfortably taking the ball in at waist height and setting the rockets off again on yet another attack.
With 15 minutes gone Lindsey won a free kick on the edge of the penalty area, she knocked the ball past her opponent and sprinted past her and as she did she was cynically hacked down and the culprit was fortunate to avoid a booking, Indie took the kick and hit the effort into the side netting.
Harvester were strong in the central defensive area and the rockets seemed to pick up on this and began to alternate the wings that they attacked on in order to pull the 2 central defenders about and with 15 minutes remaining this paid off, Lindsey again beat 2 opponents as she broke from deep in the rockets own half and as she cut into the area she drew a centre back over and rolled the ball back to Nicole who sold the other centre back a left footed dummy before smashing home an unstoppable right footed shot to put the rockets 2 clear.
Credit to Harvesters though who continued to battle throughout the whole game and despite a few silly incidents in the game they deserved a cheer for their efforts.
The rockets remained disciplined and focused for the remainder of the game and in doing so played some excellent football along the way, free flowing, passing football which was a real joy to watch and with the added bonus of 3 more valuable points at the end of it.
